Rome Declaration Calls for AI and Nuclear Disarmament

On 16 July, more than 200 scholars, technology leaders and former heads of state signed the “Rome Declaration for a Disarmed and Disarming Peace in the Era of Artificial Intelligence and Nuclear Weapons” at the Capitoline Hill in Rome, concluding a three‑day Vatican summit. The document, inspired by Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical *Magnifica humanitas*, outlines six points urging governments, corporations and international bodies to slow the development of advanced AI, to negotiate the irreversible elimination of nuclear weapons, and to ensure AI systems operate under international law and human‑rights standards.

Participants included dozens of Nobel laureates, AI experts from OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Anthropic, and former world leaders such as former Italian mayor Roberto Gualtieri. The declaration stresses that the convergence of autonomous AI and nuclear armaments poses an unprecedented strategic risk, and calls for coordinated global governance to prevent a new arms race.
