Vatican bishops reach consensus on pastoral approach to marriage and family

Bishops from around the world gathered at the Vatican to mark the tenth anniversary of Pope Francis’s apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia. The meeting, which included the presidents of the world’s bishops’ conferences, focused on marriage and family life, signaling a shift toward a more pastoral and experience-based methodology.

Participants reported a growing global consensus regarding the Church’s approach to “irregular situations,” such as divorced and civilly remarried Catholics and same-sex couples. Rather than focusing on doctrinal condemnation, the emerging approach emphasizes listening, accompanying, and discerning. The goal is to move away from labeling certain lifestyles as “irregular” and instead adopt a sensitive approach that acknowledges the lived experiences of individuals.

This methodological shift is described as a move toward a theology of listening that engages with the personal and social relevance of the People of God across diverse cultural contexts.
