Vatican City named Europe's most overcrowded destination amid overtourism concerns

Recent studies and industry reports highlight the growing impact of overtourism on iconic global destinations. A study by Go2Africa has identified Vatican City as the most overcrowded tourist destination in Europe, noting a ratio of approximately 709 visitors for every resident. The Vatican Museums, a major draw for millions of visitors annually, contribute significantly to this density.

In response to the challenges of overtourism in places like Venice and Barcelona, adventure travel operator Intrepid Travel has released a ‘Not Hot List’. This list identifies ten emerging destinations for 2027 that are prepared to manage increasing visitor numbers through improved infrastructure and community-led initiatives without compromising local quality of life. One such destination is the Samburu Reserve in Kenya, which is noted for its potential to balance tourism with its natural landscape.
