Vatican defines ecological sin in new theological document

The Vatican's International Theological Commission has released a new document titled ‘Care for Our Common Home: A Responsible and Brotherly Response to God in the Holy Trinity’. Approved by Pope Leo XIV, the text expands on the concept of ‘ecological sin’, framing environmental protection as a spiritual and theological obligation rather than just a matter of ethics or policy.

According to the document, an ecological sin includes both actions and omissions that harm nature, humanity, and future generations. It defines such sin as a refusal to fulfill God’s plan for creation, making it a transgression against both the Creator and the created world.

The Commission advocates for ‘ecological spirituality’, which encourages moderation in consumption, mindful purchasing habits, and reduced energy use. The document critiques greed and materialism, suggesting that the right to private property is not unlimited and that the Earth must be protected for the benefit of all people.
