Vatican Establishes AI Commission to Guide Ethical Use of Technology

The Vatican has created an Interdicasterial Commission for Artificial Intelligence, chaired by Cardinal Michael Czerny. Its inaugural meeting took place on 17 June at the Palazzo San Calisto in Rome, bringing together officials from the Dicasteries of the Doctrine of Faith, Culture and Education, Communication, Promotion of Integral Human Development, and the Papal Academies of Life, Sciences and Social Sciences.

The commission’s mandate is to ensure that artificial intelligence serves human dignity, the common good and the mission of the Church. It will coordinate existing Vatican AI initiatives, map current projects, and develop guidelines for the responsible use of AI within Vatican institutions. The work is framed by Pope Francis’ encyclical *Magnifica Humanitas*, which addresses the impact of AI on human persons. The body plans to meet again in mid‑July to continue its work.
