Vatican frames environmental destruction as a sin against creation

The Vatican is addressing the global ecological crisis by framing environmental destruction as a “sin against the creation and the Creator.” According to a document titled “Caring for our Common Home,” released by the International Theological Commission with the authorization of Pope Leo XIV, the environmental crisis cannot be solved through technical means alone but requires a fundamental shift in cultural values.

The document introduces the concept of “social sin” and “structures of sin,” suggesting that responsibility lies not only with individual actions but also within the economic, political, and cultural mechanisms that drive environmental degradation. This approach aims to move beyond scientific metrics like pollution levels or deforestation rates to address the moral responsibility behind these issues.

In a related context, Cardinal Jaime Spengler, President of the Brazilian Episcopal Conference and CELAM, emphasized the need for dialogue and listening to address the socio-environmental crisis, which disproportionately affects the poor. During the Fratelli Tutti Synodal Meeting, leaders discussed the necessity of uniting diverse voices to create a more just and dignified future, linking human dignity directly to the dignity of nature.
