Vatican grants spiritual link to Cancún sanctuary
The Vatican has permanently granted a spiritual bond of affinity to the Santuario María Desatadora de Nudos in Cancún, linking it to the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. This ecclesiastical distinction allows pilgrims to obtain plenary indulgences at the sanctuary, provided they fulfill specific Catholic requirements such as confession, communion, and prayer for the Pope's intentions.
Founded in 2015 by Father Luis Pablo Garza, the sanctuary has become a major center for religious tourism in the Mexican Caribbean. The site attracts approximately 30,000 visitors weekly, with numbers rising significantly during Holy Week and Christmas. To accommodate growing demand, the sanctuary plans to expand its capacity and develop infrastructure, including a reception center and sustainable crypts, to support the influx of domestic and international pilgrims.
