Vatican hosts meetings on marriage and priestly celibacy

The Catholic Church is holding international meetings in Vatican City to address contemporary challenges regarding marriage and priestly celibacy.

At a meeting focused on the family, Archbishop Timothy Costelloe of Australia noted a growing disconnect between Church doctrine and modern cultural views. He observed that many young people no longer accept the traditional link between sexual activity and reproduction, often prioritizing personal autonomy and immediate happiness over the permanence of marriage. This tension is reportedly exacerbated by social media, peer culture, and past moral failures within Church leadership.

In a separate but related dialogue, approximately 150 married individuals participated in discussions regarding the joys and difficulties of priestly celibacy. The sessions included priests and laypeople discussing the history, future, and practical implementation of celibacy in the modern era. Pope Francis encouraged participants to view the fragilities encountered by priests with mercy.
