Vatican introduces concept of ecological sin

The Vatican has officially introduced the concept of ‘ecological sin’ following the approval of a new document by Pope Leo XIV. Titled ‘Care for Our Common Home: A Responsible and Brotherly Response to God in the Holy Trinity’, the text is the result of work conducted by the International Theological Commission between 2022 and 2025.

The new doctrine codifies environmental protection as a religious obligation, stating that actions damaging the planet constitute a rejection of God’s design. The concept of ‘sin against the created world and against the Creator’ addresses modern issues such as consumerism, greed, and destructive industrial or agricultural practices that prioritize profit over planetary health.

For individual believers, ecological sins can be committed through direct actions, such as intentional pollution, or through omissions, such as wasting water, wasting food, failing to segregate waste, or excessive electricity consumption. The Church aims to promote an ‘ecological spirituality’ based on harmony with nature and respect for future generations.
