Vatican meeting sparks controversy over biblical interpretation

During a Vatican meeting commemorating the 10th anniversary of ‘Amoris laetitia’, Sister Helen Alford, a Dominican nun and president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, sparked controversy with her interpretation of a biblical passage.

Alford suggested that the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well in the Gospel of John could be viewed as a ‘flirt’—a provocative reading she attributed to Dominican priest Michael Paluch. She described the initial dialogue as an ambiguous exchange between a man and a woman before Jesus confronts the woman regarding her marital status.

Critics have raised concerns that such a comparison trivializes the character of Christ and the theological depth of the encounter, which is traditionally viewed as a profound revelation of divine mercy rather than a romantic or sexual interaction.
