Vatican reports rise in adult baptisms in France

The Vatican has reported a significant rise in adult baptisms in France, a trend noted amidst the broader secularization of Western Europe. According to Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, approximately 13,000 adults have recently chosen to be baptized, representing a conscious decision to embrace the Christian faith rather than a simple continuation of family tradition.

Statistical data shows a general recovery in religious participation. In France, baptisms rose from 173,300 in 2020 to 186,165 in 2024. Confirmations also saw an increase, rising from 36,329 in 2020 to 46,539 in 2024, while Church marriages grew from 36,916 to 40,678 over the same period. As of 2024, France recorded 49.72 million baptized Catholics.

This phenomenon is expected to be a focal point during the upcoming apostolic visit of Pope Leo XIV to France from September 25 to 28. The Pope’s itinerary includes a planned meeting with newly baptized adults and catechumens currently preparing for baptism.
