Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin starts official visit to Guatemala

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, began a multi‑day official visit to Guatemala on 1 August, scheduled to run through the following Tuesday. He will meet President Bernardo Arévalo and Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martínez, and will celebrate a public Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral attended by the president, first lady Lucrecia Peinado, Vice President Karin Herrera and members of the diplomatic corps.

The delegation will discuss peace, justice, anti‑corruption measures, organized crime, migration and human‑rights issues. The Guatemalan government reiterated its invitation to the Pope for a future apostolic trip, citing the Catholic Church’s influence over roughly 40 % of the population.
