Pope Leo XIV confronts SSPX defiance over July bishop consecrations

The traditionalist Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) issued an open letter and a 154‑point Profession of Faith to Pope Leo XIV and the College of Cardinals, reaffirming its adherence to Catholic tradition while announcing plans to consecrate four new bishops on July 1 without a papal mandate. The Vatican has warned that the ordinations constitute a “schismatic act” that will incur automatic excommunication for the consecrating bishops and the newly ordained. Pope Leo said, “If they make that choice, I am sorry, but we must move forward,” after indicating he may make a final appeal for the group to remain in communion.

In parallel, an extraordinary consistory of cardinals is scheduled for June 26‑27. At least three senior cardinals – Joseph Zen, Péter Erdő and Willem Eijk – will not attend for health‑related reasons. The consistory’s agenda has been adjusted in light of the SSPX’s planned consecrations. Vatican officials, including Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, have offered dialogue contingent on the SSPX suspending the ordinations.

The dispute revives a decades‑long conflict that began with Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre’s 1988 illicit consecrations. SSPX claims that “Tradition contains all the remedies for the deepest ills afflicting the Church,” and frames the July ceremony as a necessary step to ensure the sacraments. The standoff poses a significant crisis for the new papacy and for Catholics worldwide.
