Vatolla celebrates the 'Flight of the Angel' tradition

In the Cilento region of Italy, local traditions continue to blend religious devotion with popular culture. A prominent example is the “Volo dell’Angelo” (Flight of the Angel) held in Vatolla, a hamlet of Perdifumo.

During this event, a child representing a divine messenger is suspended by a steel cable and pulley system to fly across the square. The performance features a scripted, sung duel between the Angel and the Devil, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. In Vatolla, this spectacle takes place on August 15 between the towers of Palazzo De Vargas, the former residence of the Rocca family and current seat of the Giambattista Vico Foundation.

While the tradition historically involved family members playing the roles, demographic shifts in small villages have necessitated changes to how the performance is cast. These local customs, including religious processions and patron saint festivals, serve as significant markers of collective memory and cultural identity within the community.
