Vaughn Grissom criticizes Red Sox reliance on analytics

Former Boston Red Sox infielder Vaughn Grissom has attributed his lack of success during his tenure in Boston to the organization’s heavy reliance on data and analytics. Grissom, who was acquired by the Red Sox in the Chris Sale trade, struggled with injuries and a .190 batting average during his 31 games with the club.

Speaking to the Boston Herald, Grissom suggested that the team’s analytical approach failed to account for his actual play on the field. “I think I would probably attribute that to the computer, you know what mean?” Grissom said, adding, “Some people watch the game, some people go on the computer.” He expressed that while his statistics may not have looked ideal on paper, he believes his performance has improved since joining the Los Angeles Angels, where he is currently a regular starter.

Grissom’s comments echo previous criticisms regarding the Red Sox's management style under chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, specifically concerning the balance between observational scouting and statistical modeling.
