VCÖ analysis: Winter darkness increases pedestrian accident risks in Austria
An analysis by the mobility organization VCÖ, based on data from Statistik Austria, reveals that pedestrian accidents at protected crossings significantly increase during the winter months of November, December, and January. During this period, 136 accidents were recorded in November, 119 in December, and 101 in January, resulting in four fatalities, 72 serious injuries, and 287 minor injuries.
Nearly two-thirds of these accidents occurred during darkness or twilight. Vienna recorded the highest number of incidents with 128, followed by Lower Austria with 55, Styria with 44, and Upper Austria with 42. Notably, eight out of ten accidents took place on roads with a 50 km/h speed limit. The VCÖ highlighted that senior citizens represent a disproportionately high percentage of serious and fatal victims.
In response to these findings, the VCÖ is calling for improved visibility and safety measures. These include expanding the current parking and stopping prohibition near protected crossings from five to ten meters and improving lighting in the immediate vicinity of these paths to ensure pedestrians are visible to motorists earlier.
