Vöcklamarkt industrial terminal project sparks local debate

Vöcklamarkter Holzindustrie GmbH (VM Holz) and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) have unveiled plans for the Rail Intermodal Terminal Austria (RITA) in Vöcklamarkt, Upper Austria. The project involves constructing a fully electric freight terminal with five tracks designed to handle trains up to 740 meters long, alongside a 22,000 m² warehouse intended to serve as a central hub for the Lenzing Gruppe.

The proposed infrastructure includes modern, noise-insulated portal cranes and facilities for 20 electric trucks to support shuttle traffic. To facilitate the project, a change in the local zoning plan would be required to convert green space into building land. The terminal is slated for commissioning in 2029.

The announcement has met with local opposition. Social media criticism has focused on potential declines in quality of life and the perceived mismatch between a large-scale industrial project and a small municipality. In response to the ongoing discussions surrounding the terminal, Mayor Alois Six has announced his intention to resign at the end of September.
