Václav Klaus criticizes Ursula von der Leyen
Former Czech President Václav Klaus has issued a sharp critique of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen following her recent speech on the state of the European Union. Klaus accused her of lacking self-reflection and criticized the perceived arrogance of Brussels officials, whom he referred to as ‘homo brucchelarum’.
Klaus expressed concern that the current political rhetoric mirrors language used during the communist era, specifically citing phrases reminiscent of American imperialism. He stated that such rhetoric makes him fear war for the first time in his adult life. He further argued that despite leading the Commission since 2019, von der Leyen appears to lack an understanding of her direct responsibility for the Union’s development.
