Václav Svoboda sentenced to five years for 67 million CZK embezzlement
The Regional Court in České Budějovice has sentenced former insolvency administrator Václav Svoboda to five years in prison for the embezzlement of 67 million CZK. According to the indictment, Svoboda diverted funds from indebted companies he was managing into his own accounts over a period of 13 years, harming dozens of creditors.
During the trial, the 73-year-old defendant admitted to the charges, claiming he was being extorted by individuals from the Balkans. However, the judge expressed skepticism regarding this claim, suggesting instead that the funds may have been used for unsuccessful real estate investments in Kotor, Montenegro. Despite Svoboda's plea for leniency due to his age and health, the court rejected a suspended sentence, noting that such a ruling would set a precedent where elderly defendants could avoid prison for serious crimes. Svoboda has appealed the verdict.
