Tampa Bay Rays stars Mesa Jr. and Caminero lead late-season surge

Tampa Bay Rays players Victor Mesa Jr. and Junior Caminero are delivering standout performances as the MLB season nears its conclusion. Mesa Jr., a Cuban outfielder, was named the American League Player of the Week for the period of September 7 to 13. During this stretch, he recorded a .556 batting average with ten hits, including three home runs, and an OPS of 1.914.

Junior Caminero, a Dominican third baseman, has also emerged as a key figure for the Rays. Caminero recently hit his 41st home run of the season—leading the American League—in a walk-off victory against the Oakland Athletics. This marked his second walk-off home run in four games, following a blast that secured the Rays' postseason berth.

These performances have fueled a late-season American League MVP debate between Caminero and Houston Astros hitter Yordan Alvarez. While Alvarez maintains a high batting average and leads in several categories, Caminero’s recent power surge and defensive presence at third base have strengthened his candidacy.
