VDI releases new guidelines for large-scale heat pump applications
A new technical guideline, VDI 4646, has been released to support the planning and evaluation of large-scale heat pump systems. Unlike previous standards focused on residential buildings, this guideline targets industrial, commercial, and district heating applications with thermal outputs exceeding 100 kilowatts. The standard provides methodologies for estimating heating and cooling requirements, determining the Coefficient of Performance (COP), and assessing economic viability through internal rate of return and payback period calculations.
In a related development regarding heating alternatives, geothermal heat pumps are being highlighted for their efficiency and long-term economic benefits. By utilizing the constant temperatures found underground in Central Europe, these systems can provide reliable heating in winter and passive cooling in summer. Geothermal systems, such as earth collectors or probes, offer a quiet and visually unobtrusive alternative to air-source heat pumps, despite higher initial investment costs.
