Veaceslav Platon sent to trial over Moldova-Agroindbank takeover

Veaceslav Platon has been sent to trial in Moldova following the conclusion of a criminal investigation into an illegal scheme to seize control of Moldova-Agroindbank SA. The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office alleges that Platon organized transactions using falsified documents to acquire a 43.11% stake in the bank, valued at over 400 million lei, without the consent of legal owners or their successors.

Prosecutors claim the scheme allowed Platon to install loyal personnel in the bank's leadership to exercise control. To conceal the illicit origin of the shares, they were reportedly traded to non-resident companies of which Platon was the ultimate beneficiary. The funds used for these fictitious acquisitions are alleged to have originated from the ‘Russian Laundromat’.

Platon, who was previously acquitted in a 2017 bank fraud case after prosecutors dropped charges, had been an international fugitive. He was detained in the United Kingdom in 2025 following an extradition request and was subsequently released on bail. Platon maintains his innocence.
