Vection viper sighted in Somogy County, Hungary

A rare and strictly protected viperus berus, known as the vection viper, was recently photographed near Kaszó in Somogy County, Hungary. This sighting is considered a significant conservation event because the species has seen a drastic population decline in recent decades.

In Hungary, these venomous snakes are now found only in isolated pockets, primarily in Somogy, Zala, the Tisza region, Bereg, and the Zemplén Mountains. They prefer moist, marshy environments, forest edges, and shrubbery. The species is threatened by habitat fragmentation and human disturbance.

The viper is characterized by a distinctive dark, zigzag pattern on its back and a triangular head. While they generally avoid human contact, they may bite if cornered or provoked. Experts advise observers to maintain a safe distance and note that capturing or harassing the animal is illegal under strict protection laws.
