Vedanta Aluminium targets growth in India’s power transmission sector
Vedanta Aluminium is preparing to meet rising demand for specialized electrical-grade aluminium as India expands its power transmission infrastructure to support renewable energy integration.
According to assessments by ICRA, India could see transmission investments of ₹5–6 trillion between FY2027 and FY2032. This is part of the National Electricity Plan (2023–2032), which anticipates total transmission spending exceeding ₹9.15 lakh crore. These investments aim to increase transmission line length to approximately 627,000 circuit kilometers and substation capacity to 2,171 GVA by March 2030.
The Central Electricity Authority is targeting nearly 900 GW of non-fossil capacity by FY2036. To manage this, high-voltage direct-current corridors are required to connect renewable-rich regions to demand centers. Vedanta Aluminium noted that the expanding network—which must traverse diverse terrains including coastal belts, rivers, and hilly regions—will require specific aluminium grades offering tailored combinations of strength, conductivity, and corrosion resistance.
