Vedanta invests USD 600 million to double zinc capacity in South Africa
Vedanta Limited has doubled its annual zinc production capacity at its Gamsberg operations in South Africa’s Northern Cape province to 500,000 tonnes. The expansion follows a nearly USD 600 million investment in Gamsberg Phase II, marking one of the largest mining investments in South Africa this decade.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Vedanta Limited Director Priya Agarwal-Hebbar inaugurated the expansion. The project is part of a larger ZAR 21 billion (approximately USD 1.5 billion) investment commitment made by the company at the 2018 South Africa Investment Conference.
The expansion supports Vedanta’s strategic goal to reach a total annual production of 3 million tonnes of zinc across its Indian and South African operations. This includes a 2-million-tonne target from subsidiary Hindustan Zinc Limited and a 1-million-tonne target from Vedanta Zinc International.
