Vedanta Oil & Gas targets hydrocarbon exploration in Northeast India
Vedanta Oil & Gas Limited (VOGL) has reaffirmed its commitment to exploring untapped hydrocarbon resources across Northeast India, specifically targeting Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland. During the North East Energy Summit 2026 in Chumoukedima, company representatives highlighted the potential of the region’s underexplored oil and gas basins to bolster India’s energy security.
The company currently holds two exploration blocks awarded under the Centre’s Open Acreage Licensing Policy: AA-ONHP-2017/1 and AA-ONHP-2017/4. These blocks cover significant areas within the Wokha and Mokokchung districts of Nagaland, as well as parts of Assam. Previous proposals for these blocks included plans for seismic surveys and dozens of exploratory and appraisal wells, with estimated project costs reaching billions of rupees.
While Vedanta has expressed substantial regional ambitions and cited its Rudra discovery as a sign of confidence, the specific timeline and concrete commitments for Nagaland remain an open question. The company’s broader investment strategy for the Northeast was previously outlined by Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal, focusing on oil and gas exploration and production across several states.
