Veendam court convicts man for sexual assault of teenager
The Court of North Netherlands has convicted a 51-year-old man for the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl in Veendam. The incident occurred on October 28, 2024, at a swimming pool, where the man allegedly performed multiple sexual acts against the girl's will. The court determined the assault was carried out under duress, as the man locked the door of a changing cubicle and blocked the exit to prevent her escape.
Despite both the defense and the Public Prosecutor requesting an acquittal due to a perceived lack of conclusive evidence, the court found the victim's testimony to be reliable. The ruling noted several factors supporting the victim's account, including WhatsApp messages containing suggestive remarks from the man and the fact that he had previously given the girl a string as a birthday gift, which the court interpreted as evidence of improper intentions.
The man received a three-month conditional prison sentence with a two-year probation period. He is required to report to probation services and participate in the ‘Pas op de Grens’ behavioral intervention program. If he violates these conditions or commits another offense within the two-year period, the prison sentence will be served.
