Veendam opens new mountain bike route for children

A new mountain bike route specifically designed for children has opened in the Borgerswold recreation area in Veendam. The 800-meter course was created through a joint initiative by the municipality of Veendam, the province of Groningen, and Huis voor de Sport.

Designed for young cyclists of all skill levels, the track features technical elements such as jumps, bumps, balance beams, and wooden obstacles like wallrides and North Shore bridges. To ensure safety, the route includes specific signage, and children are granted right-of-way in sections where the path overlaps with adult trails to prevent faster cyclists from passing them too closely.

Local officials, including Alderman Henk Jan Schmaal, noted that the facility aims to combat childhood obesity and screen time by encouraging physical activity through fun, accessible outdoor recreation. The layout also allows parents to monitor their children easily from a central location.
