Vega de Mestanza seeks BIC status after Supreme Court ruling

Following a Supreme Court decision that upheld the Andalusian High Court’s annulment of a planned wastewater treatment plant on the Vega de Mestanza site, local residents and their lawyer Marcelino Abraira are now pressing for the area to be declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). The designation would protect the only remaining meadow in Málaga’s capital, recognized for its high ecological value and described as the “kilometer zero of the southern European environmental corridor.” Abraira warned that the court ruling makes it “practically impossible” for the Andalusian government to restart the project, and he said any future development would require a specific environmental study. He urged the regional administration to process the BIC request promptly, noting that failure to do so could lead to further legal action.

The push for BIC status aims to halt any new construction on the site and to preserve its environmental significance, which the Supreme Court highlighted was not considered in the original project plans.
