Vegan food industry faces restaurant closures and retail shifts
The plant-based food sector is experiencing a period of significant transition. Many vegan restaurants across the United States are facing closures due to rising rents, fuel prices, staffing challenges, and decreased consumer disposable income. Notable closures include Chicago’s Kitchen 17, California-based Stuff I Eat, and New York institution Candle. Some establishments, such as Ippudo and Sage Regenerative Kitchen and Brewery, have responded to these pressures by reintroducing animal products to their menus.
In the retail sector, Trader Joe’s has introduced new organic Greek-style vegan yogurts in mixed berry and strawberry vanilla flavors. However, the retailer has reportedly discontinued its Dairy-Free Cheddar-Style Slices due to slow sales. Additionally, Ripple Foods has expanded its product line with the launch of Ripple Toddler Plant-Based Milk, which is available exclusively at Walmart.
