World Vegan Day marks global observance of plant-based lifestyle

World Vegan Day is observed annually on November 1 to promote a lifestyle that avoids animal exploitation. Established in 1994 by Louise Wallis, then president of The Vegan Society, the date commemorates the 50th anniversary of the organization's founding in 1944 by Donald Watson, who is credited with coining the term “vegan”.

Beyond dietary choices, veganism is described as a philosophy encompassing the avoidance of animal products in clothing, cosmetics, and entertainment. Advocates emphasize the movement's role in animal rights, environmental protection, and personal health. The day serves as an opportunity for global awareness regarding the impact of animal agriculture on the climate and the ethical implications of using animals as resources.

Celebrations and activities vary globally, including educational campaigns, plant-based cooking demonstrations, and community pledges. Some regions, such as Croatia, have seen local initiatives like lighting fountains in vegan colors and calls for cities to join the Plant Based Treaty to create sustainable food systems.
