Vegetable oil tanker accidents cause highway closures in Brazil

Two separate accidents involving vegetable oil tankers occurred on Monday, October 26, leading to highway closures and environmental concerns in Brazil.

In Mateus Leme, Minas Gerais, a tanker carrying approximately 15,000 liters of vegetable oil overturned on the BR-262 highway. The driver was not injured, but the spill raised significant environmental concerns regarding the potential contamination of water sources that supply the local municipality. The Fire Department and the Environmental Emergency Nucleus (NEA) were mobilized to assess impacts on public health and the environment. The highway was closed in the direction of Araxá and Pará de Minas.

In Mauá da Serra, Paraná, a bitrem-tanker also overturned on the BR-376 highway at kilometer 301. This accident resulted in the driver becoming trapped in the wreckage. Emergency teams and a SAMU helicopter were deployed to the scene. Due to the victim's size, aerial transport was not immediately possible, and the driver was instead transported by ambulance to Hospital da Providência in Apucarana. The spill also covered the roadway, necessitating cleanup before the highway could be reopened toward Ponta Grossa.
