Vegetarianism evolves from ancient practice to global movement

Vegetarianism has evolved from a perceived eccentricity into a global movement that significantly impacts international food production. Observed annually on October 1, World Vegetarian Day serves as a metric for the scale of these changing dietary habits.

The practice has deep historical roots, once referred to as the ‘Pythagorean diet’ following the Greek philosopher Pythagoras’s advocacy for animal respect. In India, spiritual traditions such as Jainism, Buddhism, and certain branches of Hinduism integrated the principle of ‘ahimsa’ (non-violence toward sentient beings) into their daily gastronomy.

Modern organized vegetarianism in the West began with the founding of the first Vegetarian Society in Ramsgate, United Kingdom, on September 30, 1847. The movement expanded internationally, leading to the establishment of the International Vegetarian Union (IVU) in Dresden, Germany, in 1908.
