Vegetation fire threatens telecommunications towers in Southland

Emergency services are battling a large vegetation fire near Centre Hill, located between Mossburn and Te Anau in Southland. The primary objective of the firefighting efforts has been to protect two telecommunications towers threatened by the blaze.

Up to seven helicopters have been deployed to the scene, with six using monsoon buckets to combat the flames and a seventh aircraft directing air attacks. Ground crews have been unable to access the area directly due to difficult terrain, forcing them to monitor the response from the Centre Hill area.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand stated that the fire is burning through fine fuels and short grass. While strong winds have created challenging conditions, officials noted there is currently no immediate threat to the public or homes. Crews were stood down for the night with plans to reassess the situation at first light, amid weather warnings for wind and heavy rain in the region.
