Burgohondo wildfire stabilises after reactivations, evacuations lifted
The Burgohondo forest fire in Ávila, which has burned more than 50,000 hectares, experienced three simultaneous reactivations on Saturday. The flare‑ups prompted the emergency alert system to order the evacuation of the La Picota urbanisation in La Adrada; residents were later allowed to return after the fire was brought back under control. Authorities suspect intentional ignition of the new hotspots and the Junta de Castilla y León is investigating the cause.
In the Veguellina fire near Villafranca del Bierzo, the situation improved enough for the incident to be downgraded to IGR‑1, allowing the evacuation‑affected residents of Moreda, San Pedro de Olleros and Prado de Paradiña to go back home. International crews from Germany and Serbia were deployed to assist the operation, while the Unidad Militar de Emergencias withdrew.
The Senet fire in Vilaller (Lleida) re‑ignited under storm‑driven winds, generating a pyrocumulus and expanding the perimeter. Bombers of the Generalitat intensified aerial support and confined the blaze to its containment lines.
The Ojacastro fire in La Rioja was stabilised, with the burned area estimated at about 11.5 hectares. Across Spain, the 2026 fire season has already scorched 186,544 hectares, far exceeding the 33,360 hectares recorded for the same period in 2025. As a precaution, bathing and navigation have been prohibited at the San Juan reservoir in the Sierra Oeste region.
