Tlatelolco sinkhole accident involving elderly driver in Mexico City

An elderly driver, Inocente Rivera, fell into a three-meter-deep excavation in the Tlatelolco neighborhood of Mexico City after his vehicle entered a sinkhole on Lerdo Street. The incident occurred during drainage works near the IMSS General Hospital number 27. Rivera reported that poor visibility due to darkness and wet pavement prevented him from seeing the hole.

Despite the vehicle ending up in a nearly vertical position, Rivera was treated by medical personnel and reported no injuries. The Mexico City Water Management Secretariat (SEGIAGUA) clarified that the infrastructure works were not under its jurisdiction, but were instead managed by the Urban Services department of the Cuauhtémoc borough.

Authorities from the Mexico City government and the Cuauhtémoc borough have pledged support to the victim. This support includes medical coverage for potential future health consequences and assistance regarding the total loss of his 1997 vehicle.
