Vehicle importation trends in Portugal
The importation of premium and luxury vehicles into Portugal, particularly in northern regions like Alto Minho, is becoming a notable trend. Many consumers, including returning emigrants and tourists, are looking toward markets in Germany, France, and Belgium to find vehicles with better specifications, lower mileage, and more features at competitive prices.
However, the process involves significant costs and regulatory requirements. The primary expense is the Vehicle Tax (ISV), which is calculated based on engine displacement, fuel type, and vehicle age. While vehicles from within the European Union are exempt from customs duties, VAT may apply if the car is classified as “new” (less than six months old or under 6,000 kilometers).
Additional expenses to consider include transportation, technical inspections for Portuguese registration, the Certificate of Conformity, and IMT fees. For emigrants moving their permanent residence to Portugal, certain partial tax exemptions may be available, making the process more viable.
