Vehicle maintenance: Essential autumn checks for tires and debris
As autumn weather brings rain and cooler temperatures, vehicle maintenance becomes critical for safety and preventing costly repairs. Drivers are advised to inspect tires before the onset of frost. Key checks include verifying tread depth, which must meet a legal minimum of 1.6 mm, and inspecting sidewalls for cuts, bulges, or deformations. Tire pressure should be checked while cold, following manufacturer recommendations, as temperature changes can affect air levels.
Additionally, fallen leaves pose a significant risk to vehicle integrity. Experts, including those from the German automobile club ADAC, warn that decomposing leaves can clog water drainage channels, particularly near the windshield, wipers, and sunroofs. When these channels are blocked, rainwater can penetrate the cabin, leading to moisture, mold, corrosion, and expensive damage to sensitive electronic modules and wiring located under the floor mats. Regular cleaning of these areas is recommended to avoid short circuits and paint damage.
