Vehicle maintenance: Factors affecting engine oil change intervals

Vehicle maintenance requirements, specifically regarding engine oil changes and service intervals, depend on more than just mileage. While modern synthetic oils allow for longer 'Long Life' intervals—sometimes reaching 30,000 km—driving conditions play a critical role in oil degradation.

Frequent short trips can accelerate oil wear because the engine may not reach optimal operating temperatures, preventing moisture and fuel from evaporating. In diesel engines, DPF regeneration can further dilute oil with unburned fuel. Experts suggest that for city driving or short distances, intervals should be shortened to approximately 10,000–15,000 km.

There is also a distinction between 'small service' and 'large service.' A small service typically involves replacing oil and filters (oil, air, etc.) and conducting basic vehicle checks. A large service involves more critical engine components, such as timing belts or chains, and occurs at much longer intervals according to manufacturer recommendations.
