Vehicle maintenance guidance issued for volcanic ash exposure

Vehicle owners and commercial fleet operators in areas affected by volcanic ash, such as those near Mount Anak Krakatau, are advised to perform immediate inspections of engine components to prevent mechanical failure.

Volcanic ash particles are highly abrasive and can clog air filtration systems. If left unaddressed, this can lead to engine overheating, increased component wear, or total engine failure. Experts recommend checking air filters immediately after traveling through affected areas and following manufacturer manuals for cleaning or replacement procedures. For vehicles equipped with turbochargers, extra care is required to protect sensitive performance components.

Additional maintenance guidance includes inspecting air intake pipes and hoses for leaks or obstructions. For visibility, drivers are warned not to use windshield wipers or wipe glass while it is dry, as the abrasive nature of the ash can cause permanent scratches. The Indonesian Ministry of Health has also advised the public to limit travel on motorcycles in ash-affected regions to reduce exposure.
