Vehicle maintenance: Importance of oil change intervals
Proper maintenance of engine and gearbox oil is critical for vehicle longevity. For Japanese manufacturers like Toyota, standard engine oil change intervals are often set at 15,000 km or one year. However, under demanding driving conditions, these intervals may be significantly reduced to 7,500 km or six months. For turbocharged engines, some schedules recommend changes as frequently as every 2,500 km or three months.
Similarly, gearbox oil requires periodic replacement to prevent premature wear, despite some manufacturers providing vague guidelines or claiming the fluid lasts the lifetime of the vehicle. While manual gearboxes typically require changes every 80,000 to 100,000 km, automatic gearboxes often necessitate service every 60,000 to 80,000 km. Neglecting these intervals can lead to severe mechanical degradation, as evidenced by heavily degraded oil found in vehicles with high mileage.
