Vehicles left stationary for extended periods, ranging from 15 to over 30 days, face several mechanical and electrical risks. Key issues include battery depletion due to constant energy consumption by electronic systems, which can lead to permanent capacity loss through plate sulfation.
Fluid degradation is another significant concern. Fuel can undergo chemical oxidation after 60 days, creating viscous residues that damage fuel filters, pumps, and injectors. Additionally, engine oil may drain completely into the crankcase, leaving internal components without a protective film and increasing metal friction upon restart.
Physical components are also affected. Tires may develop flat spots from prolonged weight distribution on a single area, and brake discs can oxidize due to environmental moisture. To mitigate these risks, experts suggest visual inspections for leaks or animal nests, checking tire pressure, and potentially disconnecting battery terminals during long periods of inactivity.
