Vehicle manufacturers limit access to connected car data

A new study by CARUSO reveals that vehicle manufacturers continue to limit access to connected vehicle data, hindering competition in the automotive aftermarket despite the implementation of the European Data Act. The study, which evaluated 28 manufacturers, found that 32% have not implemented Data Act provisions, 64% lack adequate pricing models for third-party access, and 68% lack sufficient API solutions for efficient data communication.

In a separate analysis of the top ten best-selling brands in Brazil, significant variations in data transparency and retention policies were identified. While brands like GWM, Hyundai, and Renault provided detailed information, others remained vague. Collected data includes GPS location, speed, battery status, and driving patterns. Retention periods vary significantly, ranging from 20 days for GWM's GPS data to five years in specific cases for Renault. These practices raise concerns regarding data privacy and security, particularly as connected systems face potential vulnerabilities.
