Turkey vehicle owners warned of seizure and insurance restrictions

Vehicle owners in Turkey are being advised to monitor their legal status via the e-Devlet system to avoid unexpected seizures. While a lien (haciz) on a vehicle does not automatically result in it being removed from traffic, a seizure warrant (yakalama kararı) issued due to unpaid debts or court orders can lead to the vehicle being impounded during traffic inspections.

If a seizure warrant is active, insurance companies are unable to issue mandatory traffic insurance policies, and periodic vehicle inspections (muayene) may also be blocked. Unpaid motor vehicle taxes or traffic fines can further prevent successful inspections.

To resolve these issues, owners must settle the underlying debt with the relevant enforcement office or institution and ensure the warrant is officially lifted in the system. Once a vehicle is impounded due to a warrant, it may eventually be sold through a public auction by the enforcement office to settle outstanding debts.
