Vehicle ownership costs rise in Poland due to fuel and insurance factors

Vehicle ownership costs in Poland have seen significant shifts in 2026. Data from Statistics Poland indicates that transport expenditures in household budgets have risen to 11.05 percent, following a 35.9 percent year-on-year increase in 2024.

Fuel costs have become a primary driver of these expenses. Following the expiration of the CPN government program, which lowered VAT on fuel to 8 percent, the VAT rate returned to 23 percent on September 1, 2026. As of mid-September 2026, average prices for Pb95 gasoline reached 7.89 PLN per liter, while diesel averaged 8.76 PLN per liter. For a driver covering approximately 18,608 km annually, yearly fuel costs are estimated at over 10,200 PLN for gasoline and 11,400 PLN for diesel.

In addition to fuel, vehicle owners face risks from weather events such as hail. While mandatory third-party liability (OC) insurance does not cover hail damage, comprehensive insurance (AC) may. However, coverage depends on specific policy terms, such as whether the owner has a basic 'Minicasco' or full AC, and whether the vehicle was stored in a garage as declared. Repair costs for hail damage can range from 1,000 PLN for light damage to over 10,000 PLN for extensive bodywork issues.
