Vehicle protection against marten damage

As temperatures drop in autumn, martens increasingly seek warmth in vehicle engine bays, posing a risk of significant damage to soft and rubber components such as hoses, ignition cables, electrical lines, and insulation materials. These animals leave scent marks that can attract other martens, potentially triggering territorial behavior and further biting damage. Repair costs for such incidents can range from several hundred to over 1,000 euros/francs.

Effective prevention strategies include a combination of engine bay cleaning to remove existing scent trails and the installation of deterrent systems. Available technologies include ultrasonic devices, scent-based sprays, and contact plates that deliver harmless electrical impulses. Some battery-operated ultrasonic devices utilize interval switching to prevent animals from becoming accustomed to the sound.
