Vehicle recalls surge due to faulty backup camera systems

Automakers in North America have issued massive recalls due to malfunctioning backup camera systems. In the United States, approximately 21 million vehicles have been recalled since the technology became mandatory, with nearly six million recalls occurring in 2025 alone.

Canadian drivers face similar issues, with Transport Canada overseeing numerous recalls from major manufacturers including Volkswagen, Honda, Toyota, Ford, General Motors, Volvo, Porsche, Hyundai, and Stellantis. Common defects include cameras that produce distorted images, display blank screens, or fail to activate when the vehicle is shifted into reverse.

Recent specific recalls include over 17,000 Volkswagen vehicles due to software problems, approximately 32,289 Honda Odyssey minivans, and more than 250,000 Chevrolet Malibus across the U.S. and Canada. These malfunctions increase the risk of collisions with pedestrians and other objects by reducing driver visibility.
