Pony triggers severe A1 highway crash near Schweich, Germany

On 28 July 2026 a pony that escaped from a nearby enclosure entered the A1 motorway between the Föhren and Schweich interchanges. The animal caused a chain‑reaction collision involving three vehicles, including a transport truck that overturned into the embankment. Two drivers suffered serious injuries and required extraction by hydraulic rescue equipment and evacuation by a rescue helicopter (Christoph 10). Four other occupants were lightly injured.

The incident prompted a full‑scale emergency response: roughly 46 firefighters from several brigades, multiple ambulance crews, police units, the Autobahnmeisterei Wittlich, and the rescue helicopter were deployed. The A1 was completely closed for several hours, disrupting traffic, and the closure was lifted around midday after the wreckage was cleared and the site secured.
