Italian automotive sector shows production growth amid supply chain and inventory challenges
The Italian automotive sector is experiencing a complex period of mixed results. While overall vehicle production in Italy rose by 24.3% in the first seven months of the year compared to 2025, the supply chain is facing significant challenges. Specifically, the production of parts and accessories fell by 9.5% in July, partly due to a slowdown in the German automotive market, which is a major destination for Italian components.
Simultaneously, Stellantis is facing operational difficulties at its Melfi plant. Despite high production volumes—approximately 300 vehicles per shift—there is a growing surplus of unsold vehicles occupying parking lots. This mismatch between production and demand has led to concerns among workers, with reports of a potential work freeze or suspension scheduled for October. Factors contributing to the low demand include high prices, the costly transition to hybrid and electric powertrains, and intense competition from lower-priced Chinese manufacturers.
