Italy vehicle theft rates remain high across several regions

Italy faces significant challenges with vehicle theft, ranking fourth in Europe with 231 thefts per 100,000 inhabitants. Nationally, approximately 285 cars and 90 motorcycles or scooters are stolen daily, totaling over 136,000 vehicles annually.

Regional data highlights varying levels of impact. In Veneto, over 1,900 vehicles were stolen in a year, with Verona and Padova seeing the highest numbers. In Friuli Venezia Giulia, more than 500 vehicles were stolen, including 239 cars, 203 motorcycles, and 82 scooters, with Trieste identified as a major epicenter for two-wheeled thefts.

In response to evolving criminal tactics, such as the use of frequency jammers to bypass telematics, experts emphasize the need for multi-level security. Additionally, the Associazione Bancaria Italiana (ABI) has launched the ‘Territori Sicuri’ observatory in Brindisi to strengthen cooperation between banks, prefectures, and law enforcement to prevent crime and protect infrastructure.
